Mata golo is a type of death that is highly feared by the people of Ngada - Flores. Mata golo is seen as a type of unnatural death and brings stress and deep sorrow to the family members of the victim. To cope with the stress experienced, the family performs coping. This study aims to determine the family coping strategies used by the families of mata golo victims in Ngada and the factors that influence the selection of family coping strategies. This research used a qualitative approach. Data were collected using observation and interview methods. The subjects of this study were five family members of mata golo victims who were close to the deceased victims and had experienced deep grief and stress. The results showed that the family coping strategies chosen were internal or intrafamilial coping strategies in the form of traditional keo rado rituals and work; and external or extrafamilial coping strategies in the form of seeking information, seeking social support and seeking spiritual support. The factors that influence families to choose family coping strategies as an effort to overcome the stress caused by mata golo are cultural factors and religious factors adopted by the head of the family and extended family members.
